Why High Traffic Doesn't Equal High Fuel Volume
"Forty thousand cars a day — must be a goldmine, right?" Not so fast. The single biggest mistake in gas station site selection is buying the traffic count. High traffic does not equal high fuel volume.
Same cars, different gallons
Two corners can see the exact same vehicles per day and move wildly different fuel. One "strong" corner might capture 71% of its potential; a "weak" corner on the same road might capture 35% — roughly half the gallons from identical traffic. The difference isn't the traffic. It's capture: how much of that passing stream actually becomes a fuel customer.
The four levers of capture
1. Access — the biggest lever
Can a driver see the site in time, and turn in without a fight? A right-side approach on the busy commute direction, a signalized corner, clean sightlines, and easy in-and-out are the difference between a stop and a drive-by. A median that blocks the left turn can quietly kill half your capture.
2. Competition
Every station on the road splits the same traffic. Count how many you're really sharing those cars with — and watch for warehouse clubs and big-box fuelers that undercut on price and rewards. Saturation eats capture.
3. Traffic quality
Not all cars are worth the same. Commuters at 50 mph convert differently than a captive lunch crowd or local trips. Speed, trip purpose, and time of day matter more than the raw count.
4. The site itself
Fueling positions, brand strength, and a real convenience draw decide whether a captured car becomes one gallon or twenty — and whether the driver comes inside.
The real math
So the formula isn't traffic times a constant. It's site potential, discounted to a realistic capture — operators realize roughly 70–75% of fuel potential in today's market — and then gated by access. High VPD only counts if drivers can see and reach the site. Same cars, very different gallons.
The takeaway: don't buy the billboard number. A defensible fuel forecast models the capture — access geometry, real competition, and traffic quality — not just the traffic count on a sign.
